The JLA All-weather lifeboat, Sir Max Aitken III, to Undergo Major Refit in Jersey

The Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA) is proud to announce that its All-weather lifeboat, Sir Max Aitken III, will undergo a major refit in Jersey during early 2026 - a significant investment in the island’s independent life-saving service.

Since its formation in 2018, the JLA has responded to 107 emergency callouts, saving over 17 lives and dedicating more than 33,000 voluntary hours to the people of Jersey. The charity operates entirely through public donations and has no paid staff, relying on the commitment of over 50 dedicated volunteers.

The JLA operates two vessels: Albert Pinel, the fastest and most technically advanced inshore lifeboat in the UK and the offshore lifeboat Sir Max Aitken III, a robust Tyne-class steel lifeboat, considered the most suitable vessel for local water due to the steel hull construction, low superstructure and shallow draft. Equipped with the most up to date electronics makes Sir Max Aitkin III an all-round excellent vessel for local waters.

Following an extensive technical review involving external surveyors and marine engineers, it has been confirmed that Sir Max Aitken III remains in excellent condition. The JLA has therefore decided to invest in new engines to enhance its sea going performance, average and top speed along with extending the vessel’s service life for many more years.

The Refit

Will include the installation of Baudouin marine engines, manufactured in France and supplied locally. The installation work will be carried out in Jersey by D.K. Collins Ltd, a well-established and respected island marine engineering company. The JLA is proud that this major project - and the associated investment - will stay within the island’s economy.

Paul Richardson

Chairman of the Jersey Lifeboat Association, said:

We’re delighted that this important work will take place here in Jersey. Keeping the project local ensures that the generous donations from our supporters directly benefit the island community. This upgrade will strengthen our ability to assist those in trouble at sea around our beautiful island for many years to come.

The New Engines

Are due to arrive at the end of 2025, with installation and testing scheduled for early 2026. The project will include approximately two months of engineering work and extensive sea trials to ensure full operational readiness.
