The Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA) is proud to announce that its All-weather lifeboat, Sir Max Aitken III, will undergo a major refit in Jersey during early 2026 - a significant investment in the island’s independent life-saving service.

Since its formation in 2018, the JLA has responded to 107 emergency callouts, saving over 17 lives and dedicating more than 33,000 voluntary hours to the people of Jersey. The charity operates entirely through public donations and has no paid staff, relying on the commitment of over 50 dedicated volunteers.

The JLA operates two vessels: Albert Pinel, the fastest and most technically advanced inshore lifeboat in the UK and the offshore lifeboat Sir Max Aitken III, a robust Tyne-class steel lifeboat, considered the most suitable vessel for local water due to the steel hull construction, low superstructure and shallow draft. Equipped with the most up to date electronics makes Sir Max Aitkin III an all-round excellent vessel for local waters.

Following an extensive technical review involving external surveyors and marine engineers, it has been confirmed that Sir Max Aitken III remains in excellent condition. The JLA has therefore decided to invest in new engines to enhance its sea going performance, average and top speed along with extending the vessel’s service life for many more years.
