Training is at the heart of everything we do. It ensures our crew are ready to respond safely and effectively when faced with fast-paced, dynamic emergency situations.
Over the coming months, we’ll be giving you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the extensive training our volunteer crew undertake to stay incident-ready.
To kick off our first Training Tuesday, join the crew aboard our Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) as they carry out essential emergency steering drills.
With its tight turning areas, St Aubin’s Harbour provides the ideal environment to practise these critical procedures. In the unlikely event of a hydraulic steering failure, our ILB is fitted with an emergency tiller system, allowing the crew to maintain control of the lifeboat.
Clear communication is crucial throughout the exercise. The crew use wireless communication headsets alongside backup hand signals to relay instructions between the helmsman and the crew member operating the emergency tiller, ensuring the lifeboat can be steered safely and effectively under challenging conditions.
Training like this builds the confidence, teamwork and skills our crew rely on when responding to real emergencies, because when the pager goes off, preparation makes all the difference.
