The Sir Max Aitken III is a Tyne-class lifeboat, entering service in 1987.

She has an overall length of 14.3 metres and a draught of 1.27 metres.
Her steel hull and aluminium superstructure provide exceptional strength and durability.

Designed with protected propeller tunnels and heavy bilge keels, the Tyne class is particularly well-suited to shallow waters and reef-lined coasts, making the Sir Max Aitken III ideal for operation around Jersey

Since being acquired by the Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA), Sir Max Aitken III has undergone significant electronic upgrades, making her one of the most technologically advanced offshore lifeboats in Channel Islands waters. She is now equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems, and the most advanced fixed thermal night-vision search equipment currently fitted to any offshore lifeboat in the channel islands.

Following a comprehensive internal and external survey, the JLA confirmed that the vessel’s hull and superstructure remain in excellent condition.
Given her proven design, suitability for Jersey’s coastal environment, and upgraded systems, the JLA decided she was well worth further investment in the new new engine project — to ensure Sir Max Aitken III continues protecting lives at sea around Jersey for many years to come
