Don’t Get Caught Out by the Tide – Stay Safe on Jersey’s Coastline!
Every year, people get stranded or put in danger after being cut off by the tide. Jersey’s stunning beaches and coastal walks are a big draw – but with some of the largest tidal ranges in the world, things can change fast.
Here’s how to stay safe:
1) Check the tide times before you head out – especially for low tide walks, rock pooling, or exploring offshore areas like Seymour or Icho Towers, this can be done using gov.je
2) Be aware of how quickly the tide comes in. It can surround you in minutes, especially around headlands and offshore reefs.
3) Know your route – If you’re walking out somewhere at low tide, make sure you know how long you’ve got before the tide turns.
4) Carry a fully charged phone, just in case. Signal can be patchy in some areas, so let someone know your plans in advance too.
5) Turn back in good time – If you’re unsure, it’s always better to be safe than stranded.
6) let someone know – always let someone know where you are going and what time you plan on returning, so they can notify someone of you fail to return when expected.
7) If you do get cut off or see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately. Don’t attempt a rescue yourself.
