Incident De-Brief – Wednesday 8th July
At 21:51 on Wednesday evening, Jersey Coastguard requested the assembly of our ILB crew in preparation to support an ongoing multi-agency search on the west coast of the Island.
By 22:06, with our volunteer crew assembled and the ILB prepared for immediate deployment, Jersey Coastguard requested the lifeboat launch on service and proceed at best speed to Rocco Tower to assist in the search for a swimmer who was believed to be overdue and potentially still in the water.
Working closely alongside our colleagues from Jersey Fire & Rescue Service, States of Jersey Police, Drone Rescue, and Jersey Coastguard, our crew conducted a systematic search of the waters south of Rocco Tower, utilising the ILB’s onboard FLIR thermal imaging system and powerful searchlights.
The search continued within the shallow reefs between Rocco Tower and Corbière Lighthouse, with the ILB’s and drone teams working together to thoroughly saturate the search area before completing a final sweep to the North of Rocco Tower.
Having completed the search of all designated areas, the ILB was stood down by Jersey Coastguard shortly after 23:00. The crew returned to station, completed post-launch checks, and made the lifeboat ready for any further tasking.
We believe this was a call made with good intent.
We would like to take this opportunity to reinforce an important message: if you believe you see someone in the water or in difficulty around our coastline, don’t hesitate—call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard. We’d always rather respond to a call made in good faith than risk someone not receiving help when they need it.
